This is the biggest steal in the RFA compensation

His name is Andreas Athanasiou. A 23 year old center on detroit, who got 16 goals and 17 assists in 71 in the nhl.

Here's how we get him:

Let's say Detroit gets a caphit of $0 Johan Frazen by putting him on the LTIR. They will then have a cap hit of 13 million.

Larkin and Mantha will want at least 11 million between the 2 of them.

Leaving 2 million for detroit to sign Andreas Anthanasiou... Right?

Leafs should offer Andreas Anthanasiou a 1 year 4 million dollar contract. Leafs only pay this years 2nd round pick in compensation.

Detroit won't be able to match the offer or will be in a situation where they are forced to trade.

Either way is a win/win

Too bad they won't use this concept.

So if you were detroit and this did happen, would you not try to trade any player pretty much that is earning enough to get their cap at balance to collect all the draft picks in compensation they will get?

@thatguy

I’m not sure if I’m reading you right. Are you saying trade Larkin and Mantha in order to recoup picks/ prospects and bring down the cap hit?

It would probably be better if they can force Kronwall and Zetterbwrg out somehow.

Yup, Something to that effect.

I guess they should be in rebuild mode, so again, yes even a change of guard for the recoup picks.

You can’t use LTIR until the season starts. Meaning they have to be under cap without using LTIR to start the season.

Athanasiou would be fantastic as our 4c but. I’m not sure Toronto wants to start playing the offer sheet game with MNM all coming up on extensions.
