Florida trades Mark Pysyk, Jared McCann and a 2nd round pick in 2019 to the Maple Leafs in exchange for Jake Gardiner

I wish. I’d take petrovic over pysyk but that’s just me. I really don’t know gardiners worth. It’s too tough to judge. I’d love to see them get rid of him but I know that’s a lot of offence taken away from the back end.

If leafs strike out on Tavares do you think Statsny is the guy they turn to and how many years do you offer him.

Leafs will not want term on Bozak

So if leafs strike out with Tavares and Statsny what do they do?

I like both Pysyk and McCann.
A RHD and a 3/ 4 line center.
Good trade IMO.

I don’t think that’s enough to make the Leafs pull the trigger on this deal. Couple depth players and a pick seems low to me. I understand Gardiner is UFA next year, so the return isn’t going to be as high as if he was in a contract with some decent term left. But this trade also weakens us on defense. I don’t think Leafs are willing to do that. They are in “win now” mood and looking to go deep into playoffs next year. They’ve already displayed a willingness to hold onto UFA’s rather than trade them if they think it will improve their odds at going all the way. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gardiner finishes his term in Toronto.

If Leafs miss on Tavares, we keep Matthews and Kadri as our 1-2. Lindholm/ Gauthier share 4C responsibilities. Aaltonen is returning to KHL, so he’s no longer an option. For some reason Babcock didn’t like him, felt he was too offensive for a depth center. So we need a 3C. Who can it be?

Bozak is the first place I would start. He’s longest serving Leaf, and he really isn’t that bad. I would avoid Stastny. His age and recent production numbers leave a lot to be desired for what I expect he will be asking.

If we can’t come to terms on Bozak, then I would trade for a center. We have enough very good prospects on wing and defense that we can put a package together for someone.

Finally, the remaining option is to simply switch Marleau and/ or Nylander to 3C. They can maybe share the duties until Nylander is ready full time or until we find another solution.

I had forgotten about NYLANDER and MARLEAU. Your right they could split duties I think Bozak ends up in Vancouver. Some team is going to something insane like give Bozak 5 years. I keep thinking would you or I sit through 12 hours or more of interviews if we were staying in Long Island. Stamkos only met with Leafs if i remember correctly.

Furthermore the islanders have 33 million in cap space but only 12 players signed. They have made no attempt to sign Hickey or De Hann on defence plus they need a top goalie and haven’t signed Brock Nelson. Lou can’t fill all these holes in free agency where he is overpaying players. So if I’m Tavares I’m wondering what is the next 3 years going to be in Long Island.

Right now I’ve been slotting Marleau in as 3C on my mock lineups. He’s more experienced at that position than Nylander, and I think his speed would work well with Johnsson and Kapanen. You can just as easily switch it up though.

Another option would be if Leafs find someone from KHL or European league. But seeing as to how they treated Aaltonen, I would think that a lot of players might be turned off by that offer. I actually though Aaltonen deserved a shot, but Babcock wants someone more defensive minded, which also probably rules out Stastny for that role.

You think Aaltonen returning to the KHL is because Babcock didn't like him? First, he didn't play for the Leafs he played for the Marlies because the Leafs had enough centers last year so what does Babcock have to do with it? Second, he went to the KHL from Anaheim too, was that Babcock's fault as well?

Aantonen just went for the biggest payday. If he makes leafs he will only be a fourth line center plus there is no guarantee he makes leafs. Careers are short he has to follow the money.

DBF,

Do you even read the news reports before posting insulting comments? You obviously don’t have a clue what you’re talking about and sound like a fool.

Darren Dreger was the one who reported it. It’s all over the internet. The article I read was SBNation, but you can just search “Aaltonen news” and a bunch of articles will pop up.

Let me ask you this: Why would Aaltonen come back from KHL to play for Marlies? That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard. And if he was so happy on Marlies, why is he going back to KHL? The coach makes the final decision who plays on the team. Simple as that. If it wasn’t Babcock not wanting to play him, then who’s decision was it?

The Leafs extending Aaltonen a qualifying offer may change his plans, but that has yet to be determined.
