Cal- Hamilton
Tor- 2018 1st, zaitsev, 2019 2nd

Similar to what Calgary gave up to get Hamilton. Calgary trades back into the first round and gets an extra pick. Calgary gets a replacement that is a cheaper option to replace Hamilton.

Calgary's goaltending isn't good and if it helps make this trade go through maybe more pieces could be added from Calgary and Toronto could add pickard.

If leafs add Faulk and hickey UFA trade Gardiner brown they can land something good. Maybe leafs can find better than Faulk. But Carolina is finally going to move a defencemen and it's probably Faulk.

Hamilton is a very good player that Flames basically stole from Bruins. He’s a top line defender and would be a welcome addition to the Leafs if we were able to acquire him. I think his value has increased since moving to Calgary, however, and Flames will not be looking to break even on a trade. Zaitsev, who makes almost as much money, isn’t even close to being in the same league as Hamilton. This is close to what it would take to pry Hamilton away from Calgary, but I really think Flames will be asking for more.

Once again Leaf fans undervalue their players. How many times have you watched Hamilton play vs. The number of times you have watched Zaitsev. Hamilton is an adequate defencemen, either a 3 or 4. If he is so good Boston would have kept him and Calgary would not be bantering his name around. Better options than him.

Hamilton is much bigger and RHD. He is much better both offensively and defensively. He has four times the amount of goals and points as Zaitsev, and has fewer giveaways while playing 23 more games than Zaitsev.

I don’t mean to undervalue Zaitsev. He is a very good player who blocks a lot of shots and isn’t afraid to throw a good hit. I just think Hamilton is better and fills a real need for the Leafs.

The reason Flames were able to snag him from Boston is the same reason his name is being thrown around now in the rumor mill: cap issues on a team deep in defense means that someone has to go.

You are correct in that I have seen Zaitsev play far more than Hamilton, which means that I have way more opportunity to be critical of him. I can only go by the stat sheet for a real comparison. And I have to admit, I was very impressed by Zaitsev’s hits and blocked shots. He is much higher in both categories than Hamilton, while playing fewer games and being the smaller player.

Is Hamilton the better player? I still have to say yes. But Zaitsev is comparable and deserves more credit than I originally gave him credit for.
