Rangers brilliance at deadline has Leafs in fog looking a defencemen

Rangers trade McDonough

2 first round picks if Tampa win cup plus Tampa first selection in 2016

Rangers are going to sign Carlson and if Tavares wants to leave islanders rangers are only team he will want to go to.

What do leafs do about defence

Zaitsev
Gardiner
Hainsey

All have trouble in their own end

What do leafs do?

It’s pretty obvious what the Leafs should do. Make a run for a big name UFA like Doughty or Karlsson. Don’t trade the whole farm team. Wait until next summer when they hit the market, then make them an offer they can’t refuse. Especially Doughty. He should be number one in Leafs radar right now.

Doughty is staying in LA

If your playing where you choose LA or Toronto so he won't move.

Karlsson too many assets required leafs didn't have enough for New York Ottawa will want much more.

I like the idea of signing Carlson. He can play all phases of the game and is right-shooting, exactly what the Leafs need. And at 7-7.5M, he comes cheaper than one of the bigger names who would undoubtedly not be worth the 10M 5 or 6 years in. Carlson solidifies the whole defense next year, and is a core piece to bring up young guys to support over the next few seasons.

2018 Pairs

Reilly-Carlson
Gardiner-Hainsey
Dermott-Zaitsev

Or with the addition of Carlson, Gardiner could be moved for a defensive prospect and a pick or two early in the season, moving Borgman up. I don't see Borgsy staying on the Marlies too long.

Carlson is going Rangers

That's the bummer for leafs

If you look at rangers salary cap they cleaned it up nicely for free agency 2018. Then they added many draft pics in process.

Leafs are going to have to make trades to fix defence.

If I was playing, I would rather play in Toronto than LA. Why would Doughty want to stay there?

Ottawa can’t afford Karlsson. Karlsson has made it clear he plans to hit the open market and signs whoever offers him the most money.

It’s pretty much a given that to compete for the Stanley’s cup, you need a Norris Trophy winner on the team. The majority of cup winners since the 90’s have all had Norris winners on the team. Doughty and Karlsson are both far better defensemen on worse teams than Carlson. If they played for the Leafs, we would be instant contenders.

After the massive housecleaning we just saw out of NYR, I'd expect them to draft and develop for a year before making a run at Karlsson. I don't see them signing Carlson since they're fresh on a rebuild. The Leafs are probably only a piece or two away from looking like an elite team, not to mention how another year for the kids closes the gap even more.

Carlson, baby. Carlson all the way.

Again guys Carlson American kid

Where does he want to play

Toronto or New York

He will go New York no media pressure blend in not recognized and the city is a lot of fun. Carlson New York.

So I'm assuming Carlson told you this over Sunday brunch last weekend?

You're making a huge assumption, and a likely incorrect one: that all players choose where to go based on life outside of hockey.

Just because Drew Doughty likes L. A due to anonymity doesn't mean every player would rather play in the states due to anonymity. Some players are driven by coaching, roster construction, chance to win now, quality of organisation, etc etc.

The Leafs are a wildly attractive organisation right now. Much more so than the New York Rangers.

Just follow the dots few teams can land Carlson. Look what New York just did at deadline. This isn't a rebuild for them this is sell some assets load up with picks then target two players in free agency

Carlson
Tavares

I'm thinking they want no part of Karlsson as he would cost huge assets

Going into free agency

Leafs and Rangers are two teams with lots of money.

I just think Doughty stays.

As far as NYR goes unless they move or buyout Staal could be tough to sign another big ticket dman.

I know they have cap room but have big money in Shattenkirk and Staal. They do have bout $4 mil of ufas coming off books to add to cap space

As far as Carlson goes Wash would have to move Orlov, Orpik or Niskaanen to fit in Carlson. They all make between 5-6 mill. He certainly I think has best chance of moving somewhere. He will be looking as most people think between 7-7.5.

Mackin

I do not think NYR is only place Tavares would go to. As was discussed last night if Montreal offers 12+ per year, that kind of money can be difficult to turn down. They are desparate for #1 center. I know he wouldn't have much to play with but 12+ does wonders to help you make decision.

NYR is not flush with talent either, I guess better then Montreal but not a slam dunk he goes to NYR.

Once a New Yorker always a New Yorker. It's the sheer freedom of the place that is the draw. Probably the most exiting city in North America

John Lennon loved New York as he felt he could go anywhere. He forgot to see there are a lot of guns in USA.

Point is it's a action zone and athletes love New York

Leafs probably have no interest in

Karlsson
Green

I don't think Carlson with want leafs

So where do leafs turn summer they must fix this defence.

01 Mar 2018 20:06:51
You are really making way too many assumptions about where players want to go based on it being a "great city" how about going to a
"winning city"

18.) 01 Mar 2018
01 Mar 2018 20:10:14
Well, most everything positive in the last two years (outside of trading for Freddy) has come from under-the-radar acquisitions, drafting well and developing players internally.

So likely that way. Reilly has developed under Babcock's tutelage into a borderline #1 defenseman, Zaitsev should rebound from his brutal sophmore slump, Dermott and Borgman should continue their upward trajectory and Igor Ozhiganov is already committed coming over from the KHL. The team is also well-stocked with defensive prospects (Liljegren, Rosen, Nielsen, Holl) . Sticking to the ShanaPlan seems most likely.

Not to mention the team is well-stocked with high-caliber defensive forwards (Matthews, Kadri, Brown, Hyman, Kapanen) who should continue to cover up for the team's defensive deficiencies.

19.) 01 Mar 2018
01 Mar 2018 20:11:14
Do you actually think the rangers are going to sign Carlson? They just said they're starting a rebuild.

20.) 01 Mar 2018
01 Mar 2018 20:14:51
As far as Tavares goes, St Louis is the lead runner for him, wouldn't be surprised in the slightest way if they signed him.

David

Why are you so worried about our d core give it time we don’t want Carlson you try and sign JT. If you don’t think they should spend money on forwards look at the peguines line up and tell me why our defence is not currently better then there’s

you sign JT line up goes as followed

Hyman Matthews Nylander
Marleau Kadri Brown
Johnason JT Marner
Kappy altonen?

Reilly. Hansen
Gardner z
Dermott holl

Or who ever makes it out of camp next year for the d

I do believe defence wins cups but the nhl is evolving you might not need stud d anymore.

David, the Rangers did a good job clearing out some cap, but are still not in a great position. They have roughly 25M in space for next season, but 7 RFA's to sign (Spooner, Hayes, Namestnikov, Vesey, O'Gara, Skjei and Gilmore) . Even figuring an average signing of 3M each that's 21M. Find it hard to believe Tavares and Carlson love NY so much that they would sign for 2M each.

Just wanted to state that if Tavares leaves the islanders it’s going to be for a team that can win sooner than later or else he would just stay where he’s at and in my opinion it’s going to be the same situation as Stamkos and Tampa last year all this hype that a franchise player is going to move and nothing will happen.
