Sign and Trade

Maple Leafs sign JVR to a 4 yr USD$24 million contract. Maple Leafs then trade JVR and a 2018 1st Rd pick to the Calgary Flames for forward Sam Bennett and prospect LHD defenceman Jusso Valimaki

Terrible. JVR is getting more than 4 years at 6 million. Secondly, if JVR signs that below market contract, the return is awful. A bust 2nd overall pick and a prospect for a proven goal scorer on a steal of a contract?

Every Leafs fan passes. i'd rather have JVR for that contract than trade him.

He will never accept that in a million years.

The Leafs don't need a LHD. They need a RHD. JVR has a limited 10 team, no trade clause for which we do not know the teams; which would overrule a sign and trade as the current years contract remains valid. You have to hope that Calgary is not on that list.

The Flames have had bad results trading with the Leafs. I don't think they will be making any major trades with the Leafs while Burkie is there.

The Leafs are still a rebuilding team and should not give up a 1st.

Lab

Lets think this through can Toronto beat Boston then beat Tampa. NO WAY

What do we have that no other team has.

Matthews
Marner
Nylander
Kapanan
Johnsson maybe

Plus

Brown
Hymen
Kadri
Grundstrom
Korshkov
Branco

All of those players are dirt cheap except the top 3.
Nylander you probably bridge at 4.5 million 3 years

This thing is 100 % sure to produce Stanley Cups in few seasons don't rush things.

4 years at 6 million is pretty fair, he might get more term but the money is fair.

If we're paying him 6M a year, I'd want 6 years minimum. I'd do 4 years at 4.5-5M.

6M a season for a guy who plays sheltered minutes? Oof I don't know about that. I feel like the best play with JVR is maximize the return he gets this year on the ice i. e play out his contract, then let some woebegone franchise overpay for him in the offseason. Losing JVR means gaining a contract slot, cap space and a roster spot for a young up-and-coming AHLer, like Andreas Johnsson - not a complete disaster overall.

Plus this team is a legitimate contender who can absolutely hang with Tampa and Boston. Stroll into the playoffs peaking with the best possible team they can ice, and just see what happens.

I don’t know if JVR is a $6M player. That’s the most I would want to give him. If we do sign him, we are going to keep him. And if we trade him, I expect the return will be at least a 1st round pick and a quality RHD who can contribute immediately. We have enough LHD and prospects. No need to add another into the mix.

Someone might give JVR 8 years 6 million that's why leafs need to move him. its not about this spring anyway . the leafs party really starts 2019-20 that's when the wow starts and it lasts a long time.

@Ny. Magic

Lou has more honour than to pull a stunt like that with JVR. If JVR doesn't extend with the Leafs; he will go to open market and rake in as much as he can, with a team he chooses; not the above deal.

It's called free agency and the only one who has control over it is JVR. No one else. Not you. Not Lou. Not the Leafs or the league.

I would hope he extends before the deadline for 6M over 7 years. If not, best of luck with your new team JVR and enjoy your temporary team until the end of the season. I hope the pick and the prospect works out for us.

Because if we got nothing for you; then it's time for the GM to go and this rebuild will be a farce like the others.

I would agree with Finniecent assessment of this proposed deal. Calgary can keep Bennett. The Leafs also announced that JVR isn't available for a trade.

I believe JVR went on record stating that he wanted to remain a Leaf. He knows that the Leafs will need to pay their core and he also knows that for him to stay, he would more than likely need to take a bit of a discount. The bigger question comes down to whether the Leafs see him in their long term picture?

The leafs didn't announce JVR wasn't available. Kyper from sportsnet said JVR wasn't available. Why wouldn't Lou listen to offers don't believe everything kyper says.

Poor defensive play by Bozak and JVR are costing the Leafs dearly, we cannot have those two on the same line. Leafs must pick up a gifted centerman to play with Brown and JVR. Otherwise JVR has to go and we collect picks or prospects and bring in a LW like Leivo or Rychel to play that position.
