As the LA Kings playoff dream slip they consider a trade sending Drew Doughty to Toronto for a package that COULD include " Kapenen, Dermitt, Brown and a First round pick".

They can keep him if that's what you are offering them.

A year and a half later the Leafs won't be able to afford what Drew will want for a new contract. 10 M.

Yet they give up a young NHL ready RW, a young promising LHD, a young stellar two way RW, and a 1st.

Not a chance for a year and a half rental they won't be able to extend.

I'd rather keep the youngsters.

The most important thing during the cap era is having enough organizational depth so when the big contracts come they have a lot of cheap young players to take up roster spots. When Doughty comes up for a new contract there is no way the Leafs can afford that unless they move Nylander/ Marner.

Why waste assets when they can just wait until he becomes RFA and then take a run at him if his asking price fits with what the organization can afford?

Would rather keep the prospects and try to sign Carlson in the offseason.
