How about a brother for brother trade.

Leafs: JVR, Carrick, 2018 2nd, conditional 2019 4th (if JVR bolts)
Canes: TVR, 2019 1st

JVR gets Canes the scoring punch they need. Carrick gives them a young RHD in case McKeweon dosen't pan out.
Leafs get a big, top 4, RHD entering his prime. Top PK pairing.

If the Leafs are trading JVR to the Canes, it's to put him with his brother and look for another D-man coming back.

Justin Faulk would be the target, and if not, the Leafs would likely entertain an offer including D - J. Bean plus the Canes 1st round pick.
