To put in context, I would argue that Doughty today is comparable to Pronger back in 2006. Although, I give a slight edge to Pronger.

Pronger(05/06) 80 GP, 12G, 44A, 56Pts
Doughty(16/17) 82GP, 12G, 32A, 44 Pts

The trade then, Lupul, Smid, 2007 1st, 2008 1st and 2008 2nd round picks.

For Toronto to come up with a package for Doughty, here is what I see going back.

To TOR: D - D. Doughty

To LAK: D - J. Gardiner, F - J. Bracco + 2017 1st round pick + 2018 1st round pick + D - C. Carrick

With a trade like this, the Leafs D core next year will be like this

Gardiner is match in age and contract term - although his value is about 50 - 60% of the value of Doughty.

That means Leafs need to add the equivalent of JVR (and (presumably because of impending UFA status, Bracco as inducement) .

There is no merit for TML to add a 1st.

Kapanen should be with Leafs as soon as a pending UFA is moved.

But this way you have him 1 more year and for 1 extra cup run. Leafs are deep with prospects and young players and can afford to trade away some 1st round picks.

Harmonic got the Isles a 1st and 2 2nd, Gardiner would give the rangers a better option for that 1st PP and would allow them to trade stall, they'd have to retain a little but he is still an effective shutdown option for a contender

I'd actually drop the 2019 1st.
