I think the JVR trade is a bit of a dream, but I would do it, if it was contingent on the 2nd trade happening. But having said that, I highly doubt, even with the 2 1st roiunders, it gets you Doughty.

A Doughty trade will never happen unless Marner or Nylander are going the other way and I don't want to do that.

The leafs are most likely going to be a playoff team so the 2 1st will be late, Carrick is bottom pairing at best and Andreas is questionable so no from kings.

BUF: Ristolainen
TOR: Brown, Neilsen, 1st and 2nd in 2018

Ristolainen brings a big gritty presence to our back line which we lack and would be a perfect partner for rielly.

Brown is a great player who I adore but can be replacement by Kapanen. Neilsen is also a great prospect but Dermott is miles ahead of him right now.

Do u want doughty who is going to want at least 10 million a year @8 years if lilgejren turns into a player and dermott is decent and Neilsen ok are you not further ahead.

No. Also, there’s a salary cap in the NHL.
Matthews - 11
Marner and Nylander - 6-8
Doughty - 10-11.5

Gotta fill a full roster, that’s hard to do having almost 40 mil tied up in four players.

To bridge Nylander or Marner would be a mistake and cost a lot more in the long run.

Seriously, the leafs need to add at least another 1000 first rd picks.

@Dbone

Up until the CBA gets renewed in 2022?, player will be paid up front with ridiculous yearly signing bonuses on declining salary structures, that constitute 80-90 % of their contract to avoid clawbacks in 2022. A smart move for the Leafs to use as that loophole will disappear in 2022. McDavid's contract is a model that illustrates this point; huge signing bonuses (larger than his cap hit the first two years) and giving him NMC status only after the cba is renegotiated.

As for the Leafs:
JVR, Bozak, and Leo will have to be moved prior to the deadline, to get something for them and lose their cap hit. Not a chance in hell, that any of the 3 re-sign with the Leafs, the Leafs can't afford them. Lou would be a fool not to trade them, this season before the deadline, getting whatever he can for them.

If the Leafs bridge Nye and Mar for 3 years, their value after that will not rise as McDavid's does not and that's the new base contract against what all others are rated. Player play to their level.

That's why a 3 year bridge is a good deal for the Leafs on Marner and Nylander. This delays the departure of one of them and the club still has control over them during the negotiations for an 8 year extension.

The Leafs sign which ever one of them has performed better and trade the other for picks/ prospects.

I don’t disagree that the Leafs don’t resign any of Leo, JvR or Bozak. I think they simply let them walk after their playoff run however long or short it may be.
