The question is what will the Jets give us for Gardiner. They sorely need some offensive talent on the LHS. We will need to move him, as we are crowded on the LHS and the money crunch will hit when his contract is up.

The obvious trade piece is Trouba. Trouba is younger and offers toughness that Gardiner doesn't offer. But Gardiner offers puck movement, skating, and more offence.

So how about:

TOR:
Gardiner, Carrick, cond 2019 2nd(3rd if Trouba bolts)

WPG:
Trouba, Harkins, cond 2020 2nd(3rd if Gardiner bolts)

The Jets get their LHD and a 3rd line D in Carrick (which is what they need).

The Leafs get an anchor to play with Rielly for the next 7 years or more.(Assuming he signs a long term deal). Being an RFA and the fact that the Leafs are on the cusp of challenging; that may be possible.

And the Leafs take a gamble on Harkins whose junior numbers were good but his AHL numbers this year are "meh".

Your not moving gardener he doesn't expire til end next season. You need to add a quality defencemen not subtract. 18 months from now everything is different for leafs Liljegren and few other marlie defencemen are with leafs.

Not a chance from the Jets. The Jets won't downgrade from Trouba to Gardiner for a nothing prospect and a pick.

@Mackin
You trade Gardiner now because he's not a rental. We have Rielly, Hainsey, Borgman, and Rosen to play the LHS; and Dermott and Nielsen almost ready. We are stacked on the LHS and can certainly afford to move Gardiner who won't be here in two years.

When do you want to move him? When he's a rental like JVR is now and nobody's willing to pay much for a rental.

Liljegren is not the type of defenceman missing from the Leafs, but Trouba is. Think Manson if you have difficulty with it. A type of D the Leafs don't have in Liljegren, and won't see in Rasanen or any of the other prospects.

@mem.
Troubas not that good, otherwise he would have got traded last year, and will never have Gardiners offense, and on top of that, may not want to stay in the Peg. The LHS of the Jets defence is atrocious, and a cause of concern for them. The RHS will still have Myers and Buffy, plus they are getting Carrick who's already a valid NHL 3rd liner.

Besides, the Jets can just say no, and pay Trouba 7-8M over 8 years, and the Leafs will shop Gardiner elsewhere. The Jets impotent LHD will bleed them right out of the playoffs; again.

That is of course if Trouba even wants to stay in the Peg. Kind of doubt it, and that lowers any return for him because all of the other teams know you have to trade him. Just like Kessel got squat in return.

Downgrade, hardly. Gardiner got 43 points last year and was plus 24.

Trouba 33 points and only plus 4. Much worse.

The downgrade is Trouba. The Leafs just have a need for him on the RHS as the Jets do on the LHS for Gardiner.

Please lab 16 if Trouba isn't any good, then get together with the other Leaf fans and quit begging us to send you Trouba every week because you know the Leafs D is holding your team back.
