Leafs: JVR

Vegas: Colin Miller

Why leafs do it: the leafs have obvious forward depth, especially on the wings waiting for a bigger role (kapanen, Leivo, soshnikov) . The chances of them bringing back JVR is very small beyond this year anyway. They can get a 25-26 year old solid RHD with a bomb of a shot for the PP that they haven’t had since maybe Bryan McCabe (phaneufs was a rocket but never hit the net) . They can extend him right away at a reasonable cap hit and have Rielly, Miller, Gardiner, Zaitsev, all between 23 and 27 and all for less than $18 mill.

Why vegas does it: Vegas has D depth that they have tried to move and make room on that crowded blue line. Getting JVR also gives them 3 options in March. They can resign Him to replace James Neal if they trade him, they can trade both for a huge boost to their prospect and draft pick pool or they can trade him for the type of package they were hoping to get for Neal if they wanted to keep Neal now that he’s kind of become the early fave of the organization and thriving in the role.

Not too long ago I was hoping for the moon in a JVR trade but I think it’s time to realize that leafs need a D that can play now, and most teams willing to pay a big price for a UFA scorer are giving picks.

You need to pay for the big 3 and Matthews will come in around 10.5-11 Million.

I think Nylander and Marner can be held to 7 M each.

That's 25M (or roughly 1/ 3) against the cap that all other players would have to be weighted against.

If the Leafs have players being paid chump change, then in two years that is who they will play. Otherwise they have to start moving contracts and cap to fit. (see the Chicago Blackhawks) .

Better off trading one of the big 3. I say Nylander.

You can thank the Oilers and Sabres for this predicament who have massively overpaid their young stars. I hope Lou can talk sense to them.

I think marner will definitely turn it on toward the end of the season, but I see him more in the range of kadris contract if the sign him in the summer. As for nylander, you're probably right at around 7mil and hopefully they convince Matthews to not take his max. Although he deserves every penny.

Sorry rambled on and forgot to answer the trade proposal

If the Leafs can sign Miller for 3-4M then that's a good deal except JVR is worth a little more than Miller and would require a draft pick as well. A 1st, and if JVR doesn't re-sign with the Knights it becomes a 2nd (It stays a first if he is traded) .

If you think that's high; how do you explain Duchene getting so much at 1 year younger than JVR was last year with the same two years remaining. Duchene has been "meh" the last 3 years and not any better than JVR.

TOR: JVR
VEG: Miller, cond. 1st

Would Vegas want JVR; probably not - they still have to get rid of Neal and a whole bunch of other draftees.

How about:

TOR: Johnson, Moore, Timashov, Rychel
VEG: Miller, Lindberg.

I would say Matthews will sign for arpund 11 million, Marner 6 million, Nylander 6-6.5 million.

Matthews- 11.5 mil, Nylander 7 mil and Marner 4.5- 5 mil
roughly in the range of 24- 27 million.

Carson:

You do realize that Marner got 61 pts last year in 4 games less than Nylander and was a 1st year pro straight out of junior (to the Leafs), while Willie is was a 3rd year pro (SHL, AHL/ Leafs/ Leafs) . Their experience in other pro leagues counts towards their development. And Marner back checks for his whole line while Nylander rarely back checks.

And as the team has stated; Marner drives his line, while Nylander does not.

Marner got 61 pts in the NHL, while Matthews got 46 in Zurich, a lesser league. And Matthew only got 69 - 8 points better than the other 2. Marner lead the team in points when he got injured, he just didn't do as well when he came back (was sick was a rumour) .

Marner started out slow last year as well. Nylander is now slumping as bad as Marner was at the start. But both will pull out of it.

Eichel got 10M and only got 55 pts in his first season. He did better in his 2nd season per game (injured) and got awarded for it. But he's the only star on that team. We have 3.

They have to get paid or they'll walk. Marner would be insulted by 4.5M while the others got more.
