Kerby Rychel, Rinat Valiev and Ben Smith

To Carolina for

Nicolas Roy and 6th Rd 2018 pick

I don't see anything out there available worth trading JVR for, their best chance to get a good return is at the trade deadline. Although by that time he will likely be more valuable in a playoff race rather then future assets.

Simply the Leafs have too many players capable of NHL roles, the Leafs will lose players if they don't move them.

Soshnikov and Kapanen are safe from waivers so likely won't be moved.

Leivo and Rychel on the other hand, I think one needs to go.

This trade puts Carolina at the max for contracts, but they gain Rychel who I think can play in their bottom 6 and Valiev who would likely get buried in the deep Canes D prospect pool but can fill a depth role and fill in for injuries and also seems to have some upside as well. Smith is simply a depth player, coaches seem to like him too.

Roy would be the most ideal solution to filling to void when Bozak leaves town, the only problem is that the Canes probably aren't willing to give him up too easily. Canes have a lot of prospects though, so it is possible they would trade one for some depth help in a year they look to improve.

What if the leafs signed bozak to a 3-4 year deal that was front loaded.

Resign bozak in the off season. He will take a discount for one simple reason. He wants to win and toronto is that team that will be winning now and for a long time. He's a faceoff guy and will soon be on our 4th line maybe 2 years or 3 into his new contract. I can see 3.5-4.5 mill for 3-4 years so he can be here for a couple cups/ cup runs. Front end loaded contract (Its a discount because he makes the same money but the cap goes up. )
Thinking
4.5mill year 1
4.5mill year 2
3mill year 3
2mill year 4

Averages 3.5 a yr also depends on how he performs (ps this is just a template of best case scenario)

This off season we will probably lose/ get rid of
-Leo
-Moore
-Fehr

5.5mill + JVRs 4.5 free to spend on guy Like marner and nylander

Plus lupul is finally off the books.

I didn't even touch the main roster, I don't know how this trade is so bad according to David. He's the expert on here though, clearly.

Ps David doesn't watch the Leafs even play.

Not sure if Bozak signs for that little. He's a bona fide 4-4.5 mil AAV centre. As a free agent he gets that easily and with term. If Lou somehow manages to do it then it's a no brainer; he's a perfect 3C.

@Dbone

I like the trade, as Roy is a large body capable of some offense, and good at faceoffs. The Leafs could have taken the chance on Roy, but they elected for Jesper Lindgren.

He's certainly a 4th center at minimum, but to play 3rd line C or better on this team, he will have work on his skating and overall speed, so he might take a year or 2, which is fine.

Rychel is ready for the NHL, but, just not on this team. Not with so much competition from faster, younger players next season (Bracco, Kapanen, Grundstrom, Korshkov, Brooks, Johnsson, Timashov, maybe Moore and others) . Yes, Kapanen can play LW (Finland) . Bracco's roving style of play means you can put him just about anywhere.

Rychel would help the average Canes offense immediately. The others are decent depth pieces at low prices for the cost concious Canes.

So; to trade a prospect like Rychel, who will only get displaced soon, in exchange for a prospect like Roy, who has all the attributes of a 2nd line center if he puts it together; is a good gamble for the Leafs to take. Especially since we are giving up only minor pieces in addition to Rychel.

So a good deal by Dbone.

And it moves 3 contracts for one which offers better flexibility for making trades later.

Agree with Labs analysis, good trade Dbone. Could battle Moore for the 4C job this year with potential to move up the line-up if Bozak gets moved. Well done.
