Don't you think picks are better for Jvr a first to a playoff pushing team defence fixes itself soon in a yr defence isn't going to b a problem.

You're assuming defencemen in the system will pan out. And even if they all do, what is wrong with having more players than you need?

DBH

You want to spend heavy cap dollars making a trade when solutions are coming.

Krh27,
I really don't believe that Washington would do this trade as they are in a win now situation. Adding through subtracting on their defence is unlikely for a playoff bound tram. Some may believe that Washington is set to regress, but I would be reluctant to think they wouldn't be in the playoffs this year. There's still enough talent and good pieces on their team to be a contender. Whether they get out of the early rounds is another question and thread altogether. Even if Washington didn't make the playoffs, I' still think they will hold onto Carlson for the time being.

Both DBF and Davidmackin make some valid points.

I'm in agreement with you DBF on the assumption of the Leafs defence. People can't assume that these new additions like Rosen, Borgmen will pan out, or that Carrick will ascend to a permanent top 4 role, or that Neilson makes this team, whether Dermott is ready. There are so many scenarios and variables that still need to play out which is why the Leafs brass is taking things slow to see what transpires. The hope is that some of these guys they've drafted will make the team. They're aware of the numbers of prospects and they know not everyone will make it. But if they draft enough and patiently develop enough, then eventually some players will stick, and at affordable prices. Then all this talk about acquiring other teams top defenders can fizzle.

Maybe some like Doughty decides to come to Toronto as a free agent? This team could make itself a really attractive landing spot again for high profile players. Babcock had mentioned in one press conference that if they make Toronto a safe place to play, elite players will come. This has already started to happen and Marleau is evidence of this.

The leafs prospect list for defense that have a real good chance to make the NHL is only 5 llindgren borgmen Rosen Dermott and Nielsen. That's not a big list considering they all won't pan out. Any depth that can be acquired at defense can only be a plus. And as dbf said what's wrong with extra players. It's a really positive situation right now with the forwards.
