Waiver exemptions may decide who makes this team as the Leafs will do everything in their power to retain their assets.

Davidmackin has it right with Kapanen starting the season with the Marlies. Shoshnikov is also waiver exempt and will likely join Kapanen in the minors so there's no need to trade him.

Rychel and Leivo are not waiver exempt which is why management will likely send Kapanen and Shoshnikov down so that they can hold onto Leivo and Rychel.

The more likely scenario is Smith and Fehr join Kap and Sosh with the Marlies and Rychel and gets to sit beside Lievo in the press box unless they trade Bozak to open up a roster spot for Kapanen.

Davidmackin, barring any trades before the start of the season, I think you've mapped out a good estimate of what the Leafs opening roster might be.

Spider, I agree with you that Fehr and Smith will be sent down as well. Likely both are in their final seasons as Leafs.
