Maple Leafs - Flames blockbuster trade

Maple Leafs trade N.Kadri, J. Gardiner and K. Kapenen to the Flames for D. Hamilton and S. Bennett

Why would toronto even consider this trade.

Sam Bennett has only played at a 3rd line center level in his 3 years. Will he improve? Maybe, he is young (21); but I doubt it.

Hamilton must be damaged goods to be traded so much. The Flames are not going to give him up. Gardiner could be moved, but the Leafs have only to wait a couple of years for Liljegren and/ or Rasanen.

Kadri is going nowhere, as he moved into 2nd line center territory last year and also brings his agitation and shut down role. Sam Bennett is nowhere close to Kadri. Amazing how everyone forgets the defensive roles on the forward lines.

Lou won't make this deal, even though it is for parts the Leafs need.

Hamilton must be damaged goods to be traded so much? How does once become "so much"?

I wish people would just stop with the Hamilton + Bennett trade proposals. Why do we even need Bennett? Wasn't he the guy who couldn't do a single chin up at the combine in his draft year?

Hamilton isn't going anywhere.

I just registered for this site just to say how incredibly stupid this proposal is! How could you ever think this is a good idea? Absolutely stupid!

Felix29 this is a great trade proposal. Sam Bennett can play as second line centre on the Leafs. Do you all not know that to get something, you have to give up something? About 95% of the trade proposals from others on this site are stupid and absolutely ridiculous.

Kadri is better than Bennett
Dougie Hamilton is questionable at best. and your giving them Kapanen? Wtf.

This is such a mute topic. Calgary isn't trading Hamilton anytime soon. If Toronto wanted him that badly, then maybe they should have held on to their 1st round picks. Enough people with the giving up to get some. Calgary is not giving up a top pairing d.

How is Dougie Hamilton questionable at best. He would easily be a top 2 D-Man on the Leafs ahead of Zaitsev and Gardiner. Give your head a shake Felix 29.

Felix

I agree Kardri is better but how biased can you be? Hamilton just had a 50 point season on an ok flames team, if he's "Questionable " than does the make Reilly "Questionable "?

Felix

You obviously haven't seen Hamilton play and I would say as for right now he's better than Reilly.

@DBF
Yes he was traded once from Boston to the Flames. Anyone can look that up. I was referring to all of the proposed trades on this site and many others; probably thousands of times in total. I kind of thought that was obvious.

Amazing only you caught that.

Ok probably shouldn't have called Dougie Hamilton questionable but do actually think the leafs would be a better team after this trade? Reilly and kadri are both on great contracts and who knows how good Kapanen could be. Plus we need defensive shutdown not offensive D.

Meant Gardiners contract although Reillys is good also. Gardiner had 43 pts and somehow best pm on the team. Babs has improved him greatly.

They should be looking to send jvr to Carolina to be with his bro. The canes have a ton of defensive depth.

Seguin was traded that time, must be damaged goods. Hall got traded, damaged goods. Kessel got trade then won two cups, probably damaged goods. Subban got traded, went to cup final, damaged goods.
Player gets traded one time and they become damaged goods?
As for the trade, Calgary jus acquired Hamonic to build arguably the best D core in the NHL, they're not moving a STUD like Hamilton who is every bit a top 4 defender. Yeeeesh
Bennett is 21 with ample upside, he's going to improve a lot. He has flashes of brilliance and a lot of heart, he will put it together and be a very good NHL player.
Hamilton is better than Rielly, how is that even an argument?
I love the Leafs and the current roster but the Leafs D is poison and Rielly our #1 D is a second pairing D on any other team. Get him an actual #1 partner and he obviously improves but as for now, he's got a long way to go.
Leafs D on paper probably ranks 5 in the league. We will still be seeing our fair share of third period leafs blown.

Rielly-Zaitsev
Gardiner-Haisney
Dermott-Carrick

I don't know how Lou is happy going into the season with that debacle.

True Leafs fan, but I'll be a disappointed fan if they don't sure up the D, because this team is there in every other aspect to be in the conversation.
Even with the current line up and the weak back end this team likely finished around 10th in the league with a shot to win the division. Imagine how good they could be with a legitimate back end.

@dbone
Well stated and honest post. If there's one area of the leafs that is average at best it's the defense. Reilly is a good player but he's no #1. One wonders when the leafs actually deal with this.

Sorry DBF, it wasn't only you. Dbone couldn't read the next sentence "The Flames are not going to give him up". and get the cynicism from the previous sentence either.

I spell it out better, next time.
