We'll now we have Marner signed so that's good news. Basically there's a really good chance we win the Stanley cup when everyone is healthy. So we need someone t replace Hyman Dermott. The perfect guy to replace Hyman for cheap is Ritchie. So

Leafs
Sda
Lindgren
2020 1st

Ducks
Ritchie

Lineup next year.
Opening night
Johnson Matthews Nylander
Ritchie Tavares Marner
Mikheyev Kerfoot Kapanen
Moore Spezza Shore/petan/Aberg

Riley Ceci
Muzzin Barrie
Marincin Harpur/Schmaltz

This is our roster when healthy

Can we all just make agreement now? Ritchie and Kassian have almost no use on the Leafs unless they are picked up for almost nothing.

I like Ritchie. For the right price. I don’t think he’s worth a 1st++ though. The 1st itself carries more value than Ritchie. Throwing a couple not bad prospects in to with is more than Ritchie is worth. He’s a bottom six player. Hits a lot, which I like, but doesn’t do much of anything else, which I don’t like. At $1.5M he’s not a bad pickup. Would be good to have him in the playoffs against a team like Boston. But the cost to acquire him needs to be lower if Leafs are going to be trading for him.

@LeafsLife

I can easily see what you mean. When you look at the third line posted in the prop, you can see Ritchie really stands out from Kerfoot and Kapanen as a different type of player. One of these things is not like the others. He’s not as fast, he hits, more defensive forward than a scoring forward, he would be better utilized on a proper checking line, which Leafs don’t even really have one of. We are running three scoring lines and a 4th line that plays maybe five minutes a night to let the other guys catch their breath. Ritchie at $1.5M is cheap for the player you get. But $1.5M is still twice what Leafs are willing to pay a 4th line player, and Ritchie doesn’t suit our third line.

Respectively this deal makes no sense
We don’t need Ritchie
We don’t have the cap room for Ritchie
The prospects are worth way more
We have Ilya mikheyev who is a big winger and has skill to add what you are seeking

Hyman / Tavares / marner
Johnson / Matthews / nylander
Mikheyev / Kerfoot / kapanen
Moore / spezza / petan

Rielly / Ceci
Muzzin / Barrie
Dermott / lillegren or schmaltz

We are 1 dman away this year and then when we lose ceci and Barrie next year (6.5 mm) we can debate signing muzzin and hopefully sandin and lillegren can go. We don’t need to pay any more dollars to forwards. Back full the bottom ex kerfoot and kapanen with talented young guys as Dubas is doing each year.

I agree you don't have to pay for forwards until we lose Hymen in the expansion draft next year. That would leave us with $55 MM for 13 forwards As I have been reminded we can keep 7 forwards and 3 defensemen.

After the draft I believe that we can offer first year RFA bridging Dermott- 2 year $3 MM or 1 year $1 MM. Four year Extension at $5.5 MM for Muzzin with huge front end Bonuses, that few teams would match.
Also a $7 MM x 7 years for Barrie again with front end Big Bonus monies. The defense corps will cost $21.5 MM for 7 defensemen.
Goal-tending will cost $5.8 MM + Kessel totaling $7 MM. Thus providing a team salary cap for 2020/ 21 at $83.5 MM should their be strike.
So after this long diatribe on my part, I believe for next year the salary cap of $84 MM, we will have no cap space.

I believe the salary numbers for defense are more than adequate because of the bonuses the Leafs can offer.

My question where would you invest your monies next year, if you don't re-sign Barrie or Muzzin.

Lol. We have enough up front. Ritchie is so overrated.

@LeafsGm all valid points. The cap hit is another one though. Marner at almost 11 now eats up basically everything left. Any trades need to move salary not bring more in. Probably going to run a short team anyway if not then it will be right against the cap.

To elaborate I don't think a 4th liner needs to make 1.5m and don't think he makes any impact on this leaf team at all. He can't keep up with anyone on the top 3 lines unless he gets oxygen on the bench. Rather see someone from the AHL get a shot (anyone) than Ritchie or Kassian.

@heatdreamer

After the draft you are going to sign Dermott, Barrie, Muzzin? But what are you going to do before then? Barrie and Muzzin are both due this year. And if all three are signed, plus Rielly, we can only protect three. We may end up losing one of them anyway. Which one do you risk exposing?

We are likely to lose Hyman / kapanen or Johnson at expansion draft

Next year we lose ceci and Barrie and that will free up 6.5mm
Hopefully the cap goes up and we have more flexibility
We can debate if signing muzzin will make sense
Acknowledge that Reilly is going to want 8 plus per and that is going to be annoying to deal with - and we can’t lose him
Acknowledge that Andersen is likely gone when he becomes ufa. As we can’t afford a goalie at 7-8 per based on how we building our team. Which I am fine with as teams don’t win cups paying their goalie through the nose. So hopefully woll or someone else is good to go.
We need lillegren and sandin to step up over next 2 years
Our core defense will be Reilly dermott lillegren sandin
And assuming lillegren and sandin progress and we play it smart and let Andersen walk we are probably set up well for quite some time. At this point all available cap space is for dman as that is most pressing need. Forward are totally set.

I think Rielly will be looking for more like $10+. And that will be very annoying to deal with Indeed.

If Reilly takes 8 we should build a shrine to him in Toronto. He could get 10+ no problem.
