@BW

So, I got to ask: who do you honestly feel is the better player, Marner or Matthews? Personally, I like them both equally, but it seems like most people on site prefer Marner, despite Matthews obviously being the better goal scorer and center. How about you BW? Any preference? You’ve been on this site a very long time now and I value your opinion highly.

This proposal is a beauty. Cream of the crop here for sure. Boeser is the better goal scorer, and is likely very close to Marner’s value alone. Hughes has potential. Very highly rated prospect player of equal or greater caliber than Liljegren. if we trade Liljegren, I would hope it would be for a guy like Hughes.

Tanev is so injury prone. He can’t possibly ever reach what was once a very high ceiling potential. I guess he is included here for cap purposes? He would be good for a season bottom pairing with Dermott.

All in all BW, I think you floated a real nice proposal here. I honestly would rather have Marner, but if we have to trade him, it would need to be for a player like Boeser. Any time you can add a goal scorer of his caliber, it’s a good idea.

As usual BW, I think you did well here. Hughes could very well be the steal here. Liljegren still has a huge upside and is very highly rated, but is looking more and more like he isn’t working out the way Leafs hoped. Should know soon enough what we are going to do with him.

Good proposal. One I never thought of. Pretty even for both sides.

LeafGM matthews to me has better value but by such a small differance

Personally i think after this deal is made both teams suck more.

Reason. leafs need a playmaker like marner to elevate guys like matthes and taveras

For the nucks hey need a goal scorer to elevate petterson and company

Hughes for liljegren is a one off

Tanev is is solid when not hurt but his cap hit sux.

Both deals make both teams worse off. that's just my opinion.

@LeafsGM

In my opinion I think Matthews is the better player by a bit. He is our Franchise player and while Marner has become a top player in the league now, I think if Matthews had someone to play with that was as good as Tavares is for Marner his numbers would be way up.

The whole position thing doesn’t matter because Marner can play center and can succeed in it. Now who would I rather have on a team, I would say Matthews. I hope he stays and renews his contract when he hits UFA, but Marner is playing games right now and it’s really annoying I would love to trade him to a bottom feeder and get a ton back.

As most of the time I ahree= 100% BW. Marner got top line with Tavares Mathews got second line with Kapanen. The difference between having JT and Kapanen is unreal. I think if Nylander can return to form and Mathews stays healthy he will be a force this year.

@BW and @Craigger

Good responses. I guess personally Matthews is the better player in my eyes too. But such a small difference. Give Matthews an elite winger like Marner and see what happens. Nylander really has a lot to prove this year.

Sundin and mogilny both top 10 scorers when healthy and playing together

Sundin with any combo of crap he was forced to play with and point a game player at best.

Regardless of how much talent you have you need opposite talent to be all you can be.

Marner got this and became all he can be.

Matthews still hasn't and yet is top 5 in goals per game in the league and best 5v5 player in the league. just wait until he figures out he can be a beast. It takes big dudes 3-4 years to have that lightbulb turn on. Once he realizes he is a beast watch out.

Marner can never be a beast.

The game changes from skill to size over and over. the one thing you can't teach is both.

I remember watching the game when Mogilny got pushed into the boards and broke his tailbone. He was never the same after that. Injuries derailed his career. He could have been one of the best Leafs ever. Between the three: Bure, Mogilny, Federov, I always felt Mogilny was the most talented. Too bad he was also the most fragile. Still, he won a cup and was a huge part of Leafs success in the ‘90’s. Sundin in the other hand was Mr. Consistent. A point a game pleaser most of his career and a wicked power forward, he could do it all. He was forced into early retirement by Leafs management. They had a crap team with a megastar captain. They wanted to trade him, but he wanted to be a Leaf his whole career. The result: we lost the best captain and player in Leafs history for nothing. It left a bad taste in my mouth the way Leafs treated Sundin at the end there. We should have re-signed him and let him play a little longer. He would have been the single bright spot in the lost decade.
