I'd prefer to trade Johnsson for Pulock, but I like the overall trades.

I fully understand where your coming from. Kapanen is younger, put up more points, looks like he has a higher ceiling ect. But here is my thinking:

1. Johnsson is so far our only true top 6 LW. If we trade him were basically left with Hyman, Moore, Marleau, and Petan. Maybe Mikheyev can play on the left but there is no promise there, and he definitely isn't a proven top 6 forward.

2. We are stacked on the RW. We have Bracco in the AHL who was top 5 in AHL scoring during the regular seasonand over a PPG as a 22 year old in both the regular season and post season, and he isn't on the leafs because of our depth on the RW. We have Nylander, Marner, and now Mikheyev who will likely make the leafs out of camp. Petan can even play the right side if we need him too. This makes him expendable.

3. Kapanen will fetch you more. The Islanders may actually go Pulock for Kapanen in a 1-for-1 type deal. If you offer up Johnsson, the Islanders will probably ask for more then just a 3rd round pick.

4. The Islanders are weak on the RW, especially with Eberle likely leaving. This again may intrigue them even more to go after Kapanen. Lou knows Kappy, and knows what he means to a team. He is also smart enough to realize that the islanders have enough defensive depth, both in the NHL and in the system to make this trade.

Also I want to add that if Nylander is struggling on the left side that we could move him back to the right side and move Hyman up to LW while knocking Bracco down to play with Moore and Kadri.

I do understand that about the LW vs RW dilemma, my thoughts are it's not terribly bad. Either way not bad, but Kapanen does have the higher ceiling for sure.

I’d really hate to see that Hyman/ Tavares/ Marner line get broken up. That was one of the best lines in the whole league. All in all though, you’ve done a good job boosting the defense and still keep a powerful forward group.

I don't understand your evaluation of Demelo. I do understand trying to dump the Zaitsev and Brown contracts, but in a vacuum, both players have reasonable cap hits for their skill levels and are both arguably better players than Demelo.

@MarsBars

My evaluation of Zaitsev is that any team who gets him will expect a prospect as well. So basically I'm trading Zaitsev along with Timashov to get rid of Zaitsev's contract and then I'm trading Brown and Holl for Demelo's cheap contract.

Demelo is underated in my opinion. If you want me to compare him to someone, Demelo had 6 more points then Manson last year. He was much more defensively reliable (on the worst team in the league) then Manson. He can step into a top 4 role in case of injury and his sweet contract at only 900k is amazing. He has hit the 20 point mark twice in his career. Those of you who think the leafs should trade for Manson need to wakeup. He sucks. Demelo is better in every aspect of the game and he is on a better contract. What more could you want.
