Had an idea last time but let's make it bigger

Leafs: Andersen, Brown, Timashov
Flyers: Hart, Myers, Frost

I do like Hart a lot, I don't think he's ready for the Elite role yet but will be a future Carey Price. Then if we go get someone that can be a mentor and play 35-40 games that would be good for him. Maybe McElhinney.

Just read an interesting article about current trends in goaltending in the nhl. Seems like teams are relying less on a workhorse goalie and going more and more with a tandem 1a and 1b, where goaltending duties is split a lot more evenly. The objective is to prevent goaltender burnout so your 1a goalie is good for an extended playoff run. This year we witnessed teams like Dallas, Carolina, and Islanders all ride a tandem of goalies into the playoffs. Very interesting, and looking at just two examples, I can understand why.

1st example is Leafs very own Frederick Andersen. Since becoming a Leaf, Freddie has started close to 60 games a year. The result: his regular season stats are a lot worse than when he was in Anaheim splitting net duties. And his performance in the playoffs is lacking.

2nd example: Tuukka Rask. Since splitting the net duties, Rask has put up better regular season stats. But the kicker is his performance in the playoffs. Bruins are riding a hot Rask all the way to the finals. His numbers are ridiculously good, and if Boston wins the cup, Rask is looking hands down like the Conn Smythe winner.

I didn’t realize Hart started 31 games last year. That’s a pretty good number for a rookie goalie. His stats weren’t great, but neither was his team in front of him. Hart would make a perfect complement to Andersen to share net duties. Would be nice to have a pair of goalies equally capable of carrying a full workload. Take a lot of pressure off Andersen and give us someone we can rely on in case of injury. We all know Sparks isn’t the guy. In a couple years, Hart is up to speed, and we can let Andersen walk and use that money towards Hart. Hopefully by that point, either Woll or Scott is ready, and we start the process again.

Hart is considered one of the best goalie prospects in the world, if not the best. If we could make a deal with Philly for him, Leafs would be in a much better situation both short term and long term. Unfortunately, it is well known that Hart is Philly’s only half decent goalie. For a team that had eight goalies start in net last year, it would be understandable if they didn’t want to trade Hart. And if they did choose to trade him, the price would have to be so unfair that Toronto would never be able to accept.

I love the idea of pursuing a young stellar goaltender like Hart, but I don’t think it will be Hart himself we could get.

There is absolutely no way the Leafs part with Andersen at this stage. They want to win a cup and going younger at goalie does not help this.

Also, the Leafs have 2 stud prospect goalies of their own in Woll and Scott.
