As a follow up to the trade for Trouba, the Leafs need to trade away Horton's final year. His cap is $5.3M, but cash paid is $3.6M

The buyout cap hit would be $2.9M and $1.2M for this year and next respectively. That is an option, it would save $2.4M. However a trade is a better option. A re-post of a trade with Ottawa

To OTT: F - N. Horton + F - D. Timashov

To TOR: G - M. Condon

The Cash paid is similar for both, but Horton would count a higher cap hit to help Ottawa to the floor

The Leafs would then buyout Condon and the cap hits would be

2019/20 $400K
2020/21 $1M

This deal would save the Leafs $4.9M on the cap for 2019/20

Ottawa get a good quality prospect for having to payout an extra $400K in cash. If they want a mid round pick the Leafs could add that as well

How would Horton help Ottawa reach cap floor when he is on permanent LTIR and doesn’t count against the cap? And even if he did count against the cap, why wouldn’t Ottawa just sign a free agent instead of trading a useful player and spending money on a player that will never play again?

If I was GM of Ottawa, it makes way more sense to pay a guy like Eberle $7M, or even more, than to pay Horton anything. At least Eberle will play, and they don’t lose Condom in the process. And they can afford to overpay Eberle a little too, since it helps them reach cap floor.

Condon is not a useful player. He is also a buyout candidate.

It's a swap of contracts and they get other assets.

So now you want to pay Horton to not play, and pay Condon to not play? I don’t think I understand this trade.

No, it's trading away Horton for Condon as the buyout on Condon is more favourable. I'm not 100% sure that Horton does not count against the cap, it's included in the cap number on Capfriendly.

Buying out Condon would only cost $400K against the cap in 2019/ 20 (based on capfriendly)
