Id like to start by saying I hope we resign marner but if they can't.

Tor marner
Col makar, 4th overall pick

Mackinnon has said how he loves playing with marner and he would go to a western conference team.

No way the Avs would give you the 4 OA on top of Makar. Makar plays the more valuable position. If Marner was a center, you could get some extra, but as a winger you won't get that much.

I have to disagree with you there memarcusjoe. Marner is probably the most valuable winger in the entire league after Kucherov. Makar is still unproven. This would be the minimum the leafs would get back if they traded Marner.

In other words, Dubas would be a fool to do this.

Well themostleaf, I can see in Leafs fan's eyes Marner might be, but he isn't all that much more proven than Makar. Marner has had one good season out of 3, in a year where scoring has been historically high.

Young, puck moving RHD are much more valuable than wingers. It would be a pretty easy no for Colorado.

Memarcusjoe,

"Marner is not proven"? You must not watch the leafs at all. 3 years so far. 61-69-94.

Just my opinion but if he stays in a leafs uniform his whole career, his banner will be hanging from the raftors one day. He is that good.

Nylander is talented as far as elite skating and puck handling but he will never be on the same tier as Marner.

We need some size, grit and a couple D to go along with are speed and skill and we will have some enjoyable years to come.

Okay Jminn, I agree Marner is a very good winger, but trying to place him as the second most valuable winger in the league as themostleaf did is a little premature.

Anyways, as good as Marner is, I still think the Avs would say no. Top pairing RHD is a much harder position to fill than winger.

It’s well known that Tavares was promised he would be playing with Marner if he signed with the Leafs. That was the whole selling point. Tavares is a much better judge of talent than any of us. Jminn is usually pretty quiet and short with his answers, so he must be pretty passionate about this one, and I would agree with him. Marner is likely to have his number retired. Especially if he gets some hardware to put in the trophy case. The highest point getter two years straight now, it’s likely that he hits 100+ points on a regular basis. Winger or not, he is far more proven than Makar and his half dozen games. There is no way Dubas would trade him for anything less than a Norris trophy caliber defenseman with lots of term left on his contract. And maybe still would want more. Colorado desperate for secondary scoring, this would be a no-brainer for them.

I mean, Winnipeg wouldn’t trade Connor or Laine for Makar I’m sure. Would they Joe?

Any one notice a trend here! This kids not just a skilled winger he’s devoted to a team and a sport his work ethic is like no other he is a special player. You don’t trade a player like that in my opinion. Do agree with redwing1 trade nylander! Not going to doubt his talent but I will always doubt his work ethic and commitment he’s a bag of pucks compared to marner.

Given the inflation and the taxes in Toronto marner should get 11 over 8 years. Kucherov got 9.5 over 8 years.

I wouldn’t be surprised if marner gets the same as Mathews 11.6 but over 8 years instead of 5. I think dubes screwed up we paid 900k less then McDavid for 5 years of Mathews get how they made this lucrative for the player to double dip in his prime, but what did we get one UFA year where Edmonton got 5 UFA years from McDavid or whatever. Doesn’t make much sense to me I’m glad to have Matthews for 5 more years but it should have been at 10 per year for 5 years save that 1.6 to sign a better back up or keep a guy like Ennis.

Sorry for the rant!

A lot of discussion on Marner and well it should be. This guy is going nowhere, unless Dubas has lost it.
Marner will sign for something in the $10m range based on comparables around the league. Kucherov just signed last year for $9.5m and he is a close comparable with similar stats. Why everyone thinks he is getting Matthews money is beyond me, he is not a center or a No. 1 D. Matthews got less than McDavid which is correct, why would Marner deserve more. Its the media and the entire league to blame here for pumping the tires on this. The playoffs are on and the roundtable chooses to talk Marner contract and guess what he is worth, WHY.
