Big re-post, coming in really hot!
Offseason work to be performed and trades to get done so let's get started.
So I got chewed up the last time I posted this baby to the forum. They feel Marner was too much for short term and I forgot about goalies and if you watched the game that I just watched against the Islanders then you could understand how I forgot,
Sparks is GARBAGE! So I will make some changes and go from there

Marner @ 9 mil per season x 6 years
Kapanen bridge deal @ 3 mil x 2 years
Johnsson bridge deal @ 2.5 mil x 2 years

Let Gardner, Hainsey, Ozhiganov and Ennis walk

Toronto's Forward lines for the moment
Hymn/Mathews/Nylander = 20.9
Johnsson/Tavares/Marner = 22.5
Marleau/Kadri/Brown = 12.85
Moore/Aaltonen/Gauthier = 2.5
Bracco - Petan = 1.75
Total = 60.1 mil

Toronto's Defensive lines
Riley/Sadin = 5.95
Muzzin/Zaitsev = 8.50
Dermot/Rosen = 1.75
Total = 16.2

Anderson G = 5
Back up = 600k
Total = 5.6 mil

Total cost = D 16.2 + F 60.1 + G 5.6 = 81.9 + Kessel 1.2 mil = 83.1mil
Cap 83 mil

100K over the cap going to have to fix that before the cap trolls get me ! Lol ! Hopefully my trades can get'er done!

Tor gets
Ritchie LW = 1.5 Million
Manson D = 4.1 Million

Ducks get
Brown RW = 2.1 mil going out
Toronto's 1st round picks 2020
Liljegren D = 895k
Moore LW/C/RW = 775k

Tor gets
Montreal's 3rd round pick 2020

Montreal gets
Petan C = RFA

Tor gets
Phoenix 4th round pick 2020

Phoenix gets
Borgman D

Tor gets
Ottawa's 3rd & 4th round pick 2020

Ottawa gets
Zaitsev D = 4.5 mil

Toronto's Forward lines after trades
Hymn/Mathews/Nylander = 20.9
Johnsson/Tavares/Marner = 22.5
Marleau/Kadri/Kapanen = 12.85
Ritchie/Aaltonen/Gauthier = 3.5
Bracco = 850k
Total = 60.55 mil

Toronto's defensive lines
Riley/Manson = 9.1
Muzzin/Sadin = 4.8
Dermot/Rosen = 1.75
Total = 15.35 Million

Toronto's goalies
Anderson G = 5
Back up G = 600k
Total = 5.6 mil

Grand total = F 60.55 + D 15.35 + G 5.6 = 81.05 million + 1.2 the Kessel tax = 82.25 mil -cap 83 mil = 750k in cap space.

Looking into the crystal ball at the end of the 2019-2020 season Muzzin and Marleau are coming off the books 10 million in cap space to reposition themseleves with.
And that's that sports fans! K give me your best shot. Lol

Are you assuming Aaltonen signs back with the leafs? Sorry I just didn’t see any mention, because if I’m not mistaken, he left the lead and signed in the KHL last offseason.

Also, there will probably be a small bonus overage, and I don’t see any mention of Horton, as he could only be placed on IR as ofpuck drop opening day, and can’t be used to pay the bonus overage.

It’s nice to see Kapanen back in the lineups after the trades were made. I guess he was on vacation the first set of lineups?

I think you definitely have the right idea bridging Kapanen and Johnsson. While they have both had outstanding years, it’s hard to say if they will continue to put up these types of numbers. Both are obviously incredibly talented and gifted players, and I hope we can keep them both on the team for many years. All we have to do is burn this last year if Marleau off the books, and that money alone should be enough to secure both these guys for a long term future.

I really like your thinking here HoundDog. Usually Jodes is the only guy posting up stuff about salaries, so it’s nice to see someone else take an interest in the finances as well. And while I don’t necessarily agree with everything you have posted here, I will say that you put a lot of thought into this post and it really shows. I know I enjoyed reading it.

Two things I see I think it’s going to take a significant player such as kadri Nylander kapanen Johnsson to upgrade on rhd me personally think it should be kadri also if the leafs could get that top rhd I think it solves a lot secondly I would like to see Sandin and Rosen used in the next game or two apparently Rosen is hurt so why not try Sandin for one or two games look at dermott he came in and stayed and now is one of our better dmen lots to think about right now with the leafs trying to stay close to Boston.

Well now I didn’t get beat up too bad on that post.
Hortons contract was thought about I felt that with 2 way contracts we would be able to navigate the whole process I may be wrong and in the event that arises I sure we would be able to trade it to a floor dweller to reach the cap with a pick or prospect.
Altonen I did assume we would just resign him hat said I know he left for the KHL because he didn’t make the big team out of camp and didn’t want to play in the AHL. No he’s doing pretty good over their out doing his AHL numbers at least and we are in need of fourth line center.

Bonus overages will be dealt with this year and we left the cap space to cover that said I’m pretty sure moving forward we are clear but I’m not a capolgist or CBA guru. If I’m wrong please show me what I’m missing.

@Leafs GM there’s other things I guy can do but once you dive into to the numbers it gets tough. I do agree that someone may have to go in order to get that great RSD but we may have to struggle through until Muzzin and Marleau come off the books. Thanks for the comments and keep calm and trade on! 🤘.

Manson, sandin and Rosen on the right side.

If I could I'd like to tear that down a bit

Not sure I would want to give up Liljegren and a first. I understand Ritchie is involved as well but moving forward, they need to try and win (not 2 rookies on defence) and balance the future with the present

Said in the past I see the following

Reilly-xxx
Muzzin-xxx
Never had Rosen but sounds like he is ready. He would be on my third pair until proven
Rosen-Liljegren?
Would that last pair work? I want to see the leafs bring in kids as well but we have rushed before. I'm hoping that doesn't happen anymore

First and second pair currently in this thread stay open for me. Maybe a separate post with a thought.

@HoundDog

Horton’s on permanent LTIR. He’s never going to play again. As such, his salary never counts towards cap. Ever. That’s why you don’t read articles saying we need to trade Horton. It’s just not necessary. It’s as if he doesn’t even exist. Lol.

Another interesting tidbit that might be of some use for you in future when looking at the salary and cap situation is that teams are allowed to be 10% over the cap during the off season as long as they get under the cap by season start. This gives us a little flexibility to make trades and sign a few key guys and then dump salary before October.

It looks like you did a pretty darn good job here overall though. I’m really impressed. Even Jodes didn’t have a lot of bad to say other than a small critique of your defense.

Since you first joined the site, when you never took salary into consideration, to now, I have to say that I’m seriously impressed with how rapidly your proposals have improved. Not only do they make sense, but you really seem to have a good handle on the whole salary and cap situation as well. It’s guys like you, and Jodes, and Craigger, and all the other regular contributors that make this site so much fun. Never too serious and usually lighthearted, I know I enjoy your posts.

@ Jodes I was thinking about your post and the defense and my question is when is enough time to cap development and throw them to the wolves? In Toronto we haven’t always developed players with great success but with the sports science division we have now we seem to guesstimate with better results.
Can someone name 3 defensemen that dwelled in the AHL for 3+ years and went on to be bonafide top pair defensemen?
I’m checking myself to see if I’m off base but usually top pairing dmen are your eckholm, Subban, Doughty, Keith, Karlsson, Burns, Riley, Hedman, Dahlin, lidstrom, eckman-Larson and so on and so on. All these players played straight out of junior.
My point is if it takes another season to get Liljegren more seasoned then should we really expect top four dman out of him? Not saying that Rosen, Lindgren, Sadin and Liljegren won’t be serviceable dmen but how many truly top 4 dmen take 3 + years to develop in the minors Chabot only spent one season down and up. Just saying, I’ll keep digging on this topic. Just some thoughts.

Uh oh HoundDog. You opened a can of worms.

Here’s a list of a few players I found. And I didn’t have to search long either. These guys all played minor (not just AHL, but other minor leagues) for a number of years before coming into NHL as top lone players.

Pulock
Montour
McDonagh
Weber
Byfuglien

Makar currently in NCAA.

It’s not uncommon for a defenseman to dwell in the minors for a few seasons before entering nhl. Generally defensemen take longer than forwards to develop. Yes, the truly elite enter the nhl right away and dominate straight from the day they were drafted. But the majority of defensemen, including a lot of top lone players, take years to develop. I’m sure with a few more minutes of searching I could easily have quadrupled that list.
