Leafs trade Lindholm
Winnipeg trades Petan

Hey Memarcusjoe, what's your thought on this one?

You guys paid basically the same for Hayes as Vegas paid for Stone. Pretty big difference in return. Why didn’t Winnipeg go for Stone instead?

I think dubas faild there was dman out their that we could of got and wingers we could of got but I think the leafs organization is just too scared at this point with so many players that need contracts I just hope they can resign Johnsson kapanen and marner.

Winnipeg couldn’t resign him @ 9.5 Million per year.

I just want to say that they did absolutely not pay even close to the same price that vegas paid for Stone. A late first rounder in a draft that drops off significantly in talent after the mid first round, a middle/ bottom six forward and a conditional pick doesn't even touch the value of Erik Brannstrom. Also WPG was in the market for a center not a winger. Stone is a winger, Hayes is a Center.

Big Brannstrom fan are we MitchMarndaddy?

I know Winnipeg wanted a center. Still a far cry in talent between Stone and Hayes.

Maybe after Brannstrom plays a game we’ll see if he’s as good as you suggest.

I think I’m with marndaddy on this one. branstrom, basically a top 10 pic., has the skills to be the next Karlsson if developed properly. Followed him a bit in his draft year and wanted the leafs in on him.

Brannstrom was picked 15th, the pick Rangers receive for Hayes is 24th, so 9 point difference. There’s just as good a chance Rangers find a player that works out as Brannstrom might. Too early to tell.

I know Brannstrom is highly rated. But it’s still a long ways to go before we can declare Brannstrom the far superior player to what Rangers select this year.

The rest of what was traded was a bit of a wash. Lemieux ~ Lindberg and the two later picks are what they are.

It’s going to be a few years before this one is decided. Hype Brannstrom all you want, until he plays nhl and until we know what Rangers get, it’s still pretty undecided.

@LeafsGM

There definitely is some risk involved in Ottawa’s trade for stone taking brannstrom. and yes he was taken at 15, but should’ve been a top 10 pick that year, size and late bday were a big factor in his picking at 15 instead. So far at each level he continues to out score his predecessors. Including having over 30 shots at the WJC in 5 games. In prior years, the likes of Tkachuk, Laine and such players had done it prior years. While I doubt he will be the best defenseman to play. The upside is enormous and definitely worth more than a late 20s first round pick, wouldn’t you say? As with any player time will tell, but personally brannstrom is worth more than a late first. Because Hayes basically went for a late first, a b prospect and a cons 4th.
And in my eyes, branstrom/ a depth roster player/ 2nd is definitely worth more.

Well I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree. I’m not convinced the RFAs package is so significantly better until I see what Rangers draft with that 1st and how Brannstrom turns out.

LeafsGM,

I agree with the guys above Brannstrom was a lot more than what the Jets gave up. I would imagine it came down to Ottawa likely wanting Vesalainen, Roslovic or Niku and Chevy was not going to move them unless Stone would re-sign. So, likely when Chevy realized it was going to take a huge overpay contract for Stone (9.5 for a 25 goal scoring winger), he decided to spend his assets elsewhere.

Overall, I wish we could have gotten Hayes a bit cheaper, using our 2nd instead of our first, but it wasn't too crazy. However, I wouldn't doubt if Chevy tries to re-sign Hayes, which will make the price a little easier to handle.

Most TDL don't yield great results so I'm glad Chevy didn't waste top assets getting a guy we couldn't keep.

I think you guys did pretty good in getting Hayes. He’s a solid 2C that can be used at 1C in case of injury. If you guys can afford to re-sign him then it’s a very good deal. As a pure rental, it’s a tough price to pay, but if he performs as well as Statsny did last year, then it was good.

I guess I’m outvoted on the Brannstrom deal. Lol. I know he’s a mega-hyped prospect. And I guess to put it in perspective, in my eyes, Liljegren (or Sandin) is worth more than a late 1st, depth roster player, and 4th.

I think Vegas did well being able to re-sign Stone like that. It’s a steep price, but they look good. Will be competitive for years.
