I love my Leafs. Fast, skilled and young. So much potential.
What I don't like is their work ethic. They are lazy at times and tend to rely on their skill alone. This will cost them in the playoffs.
I believe they will need to sacrifice some skill and get Hyman or Muzzin type players in return.
They can't afford to keep all the skill, so move a couple pieces for a couple workers that will lead this team and score the ugly goals.
In my opinion, you can do it now or in the off-season, it all depends on if the Leafs are in win-now mode or continue to build for the future.
Crazy trade submission of the day - Marner, Brown and Zaitsev to the Flames for Tkachuk, Bennett and Hamonic. Salary would probably be equal.
These are the kinds of players the Leafs will need for a strong playoff push. They already have enough skill, now they just need guys with a work ethic.
Imagine a line of Kadri, Tkachuk and Bennett. This line would drive any team nuts.

No chance on marner they will move Nylander Kadri before marner.

Are you nuts? Marner is untouchable. Kadri, Gardiner, Zaitsev, Marleau and Hainsey would be the first to go in a trade. Now if it is Kadri and another piece to Calgary for Sam Bennett and a D-Man, then I am all for it.

If you’re trading Marner, you might want to be looking at Hanifin instead of Hamonic. Tkachuk is a real stud.

I just don't see how the Leafs can tie up over 30 million on only 3 players and still have enough depth for a long playoff run. I really like Marner, but I don't believe they can keep him, Matthews and Tavares. I too would move Matthews before Marner, but I don't think Dubas would agree.

Dubas made a public commitment to keep all those guys. A silly mistake, he should be more cautious about what he is promising the fans in future.

Marner isn’t going anywhere. Lol. Matthews got 5 years, Nylander got 6 years. Tavares got 7 years. Marner gets 8?

I don’t know why Leafs didn’t commit to Matthews full term. I didn’t read anything that explained the term, and I don’t care to make assumptions. 5 years only buys one year of free agency. But at least he is signed and we don’t have to worry about him for now. Another spectacle like Nylander would have turned this town into a circus.

IMHO, I would trade Kadri + Brown to Columbus, where he becomes 2nd Line Center and Toronto receives Boone Jenner and Josh Anderson, savings of $1 MM.

Or I would trade Kadri + Woll for Pesce, as Carolina requires a quality Center, savings of $1 MM.

Or would a trade of Nylander for Ryan Ellis of Nashville be a reasonable consideration.
